Nick Cave brings the experiences and sounds of his 30-year career to the table with the second release from his latest musical project since the Bad Seeds, with more of the trademark soaring piano, crunchy guitar, violins and mandolins to create an experimental new album. -metacritic

Black Mountain – Wilderness Heart [2010]

The members of Canadian psych-rockers Black Mountain have stayed busy since the release of their last album with their side projects, which included frontman Stephen McBean’s Pink Mountaintops and keyboardist/vocalist Amber Webber’s Lightning Dust. Reconvening for third LP found the band exploring new options, notably opening their doors to outside producers. What resulted were sessions with producers D. Sardy and Randall Dunn, who have worked with bands as varied as LCD Soundsystem and Spoon (Sardy), to Sunn 0))) and Boris (Dunn). Longtime label Jagjaguwar is handling release duties for the album, which McBean claims contains both their heaviest and folkiest material to date. -prefixmag

This brand-new, completely unreleased studio album features 12 previously unreleased studio recordings totalling over 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix. Ten of these recordings were made between February and May, 1969, as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create the sequel to their groundbreaking 1968 double-album Electric Ladyland. The album features “Valleys Of Neptune,” one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix’s commercially unavailable recordings, and includes exciting 1969 arrangements of the classic signature songs “Red House,” “Fire,” and “Stone Free.” Also includes unheard studio versions of Hendrix’s inspired interpretations of “Bleeding Heart” (Elmore James) and Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love.” Mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix’s albums throughout the guitarist’s lifetime. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott, the team behind all of the acclaimed Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD releases since 1996.

Portugal. The Man – American Ghetto [2010]

Portugal. The Man is an experimental indie rock four-piece centered around frontman John Baldwin Gourley’s abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourley’s innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change.

The band formed in 2003 with the union of Gourley (vocals, guitar, organ, machines) and his childhood friend Zachary Scott Carothers (Bass, percussion, vocals) after the break-up of their band Anatomy of a Ghost. Jason Sechrist (Drums and Gang) of Portland, OR joined in 2005. Current lineup includes Ryan Neighbors (Piano, Rhodes, Organ, Synth, Vocals). They are however known for fluidity in both their music and their lineup and often feature guest appearances.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Beat the Devil’s Tattoo [2010]

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is a rock band from San Francisco, United States now based in Los Angeles. The band formed in 1998. They are influenced by Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Doors, Sex Pistols, The Ramones and 1980s British acts like Spacemen 3 and especially The Jesus and Mary Chain. Their style also encompassed slower paced psychedelic dreamy grooves influenced by shoegazers like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Recently, with their third record Howl, they developed a new sound somewhere between blues, folk, gospel and rock, but still with their old melancholy. The band’s second album ‘Take Them On, On Your Own’ featured several songs (‘Generation’ and ‘US Government’) which were critical of the United States’ foreign policy and George Bush in particular. After conflict with their label (Virgin Records), the band was dropped in 2004. Nick Jago left the band at the end of their summer tour in the same year due to “internal conflict”. Following Jago’s departure Peter Hayes and Robert Levon Been regrouped and recorded the band’s third album. In 2005 the band inked a new deal with Echo in the UK, and RCA in the US. Nick Jago also returned to the fold. The band’s third album “Howl” was released that same year to widespread critical acclaim. Jago returned after most of the album was recorded but played on “Promise”. “Baby 81” the band’s fourth album was released on May 1st, 2007. In June 2008 Nick Jago once again left the touring line-up of the band being replaced by The Raveonettes’ touring drummer Leah Shapiro. Nick stated that “…I am fired again and to be honest with you I respect their decision”. However Hayes and Been released a conflicting joint statement that read “Nick won’t be joining us for the upcoming European tour, but it’s not true that he is fired. We just feel Nick needs time to sort out exactly what he wants right now. His heart and all his energy and attention is on his own solo project and he needs to see that through”.
