The Avalanches are an electronic/plunderphonics music collective from Melbourne, Australia. They are well known for their use of eclectic sampling, creating their debut album, 2000’s “Since I Left You”, entirely out of over 3,500 samples of obscure records, movies, and television shows. This is famously demonstrated on their hit single “Frontier Psychiatrist”.

Washed Out – High Times (EP) [2009]

Washed Out is Ernest Greene, a young guy from Georgia (via South Carolina) who makes bedroom synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard. There’s a sense of longing and distance in Greene’s somber, filtered vocals, but it’s what he does compositionally that makes Washed Out stand out. Backed by gently pulsing, Balearic-tinged disco, Greene’s voice takes on a new dimension. Reminiscent of groups like The Glass and the Chromatics, Washed Out is the music to end your night with, when the city is quiet and the walk home, long.

The current participating members are: Sindri Már Sigfússon, Uðbjörg Hlín Guðmundsdóttir, Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, Halldór Ragnarsson, Örn Ingi Ágústsson, Kjartan Bragi Bjarnason & Sóley Stefánsdóttir.Their music is subdued and mellow folk pop, with hints of piano, violin, acoustic guitar and atmospheric vocals, all carefully squeezed through a lo-fi filter.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is a rock band from San Francisco, United States now based in Los Angeles. The band formed in 1998. They are influenced by Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Doors, Sex Pistols, The Ramones and 1980s British acts like Spacemen 3 and especially The Jesus and Mary Chain. Their style also encompassed slower paced psychedelic dreamy grooves influenced by shoegazers like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Recently, with their third record Howl, they developed a new sound somewhere between blues, folk, gospel and rock, but still with their old melancholy. The band’s second album ‘Take Them On, On Your Own’ featured several songs (‘Generation’ and ‘US Government’) which were critical of the United States’ foreign policy and George Bush in particular. After conflict with their label (Virgin Records), the band was dropped in 2004. Nick Jago left the band at the end of their summer tour in the same year due to “internal conflict”. Following Jago’s departure Peter Hayes and Robert Levon Been regrouped and recorded the band’s third album. In 2005 the band inked a new deal with Echo in the UK, and RCA in the US. Nick Jago also returned to the fold. The band’s third album “Howl” was released that same year to widespread critical acclaim. Jago returned after most of the album was recorded but played on “Promise”. “Baby 81” the band’s fourth album was released on May 1st, 2007. In June 2008 Nick Jago once again left the touring line-up of the band being replaced by The Raveonettes’ touring drummer Leah Shapiro. Nick stated that “…I am fired again and to be honest with you I respect their decision”. However Hayes and Been released a conflicting joint statement that read “Nick won’t be joining us for the upcoming European tour, but it’s not true that he is fired. We just feel Nick needs time to sort out exactly what he wants right now. His heart and all his energy and attention is on his own solo project and he needs to see that through”.

Air Formation hail from Sussex in the south of England. They are Matt Bartram (vocals, guitar), Ben Pierce (bass), Richard Parks (keyboards), James Harrison (drums) & Ian Sheridan (Guitar). The band has been creating uplifting song based space-rock since late 1999. Born out of a love for ‘Flying Saucer Attack’ and the likes of ‘Spacemen 3’ & ‘The Jesus and Mary Chain’ Air Formation create songs awash with heavily delayed guitar and feedback, interwoven with keyboard drones and whispered vocals. Over the past 7 years the band has released two albums ‘Ends in Light’ (Drive-In Records 2002) & ‘Stay Inside/ Feel Everything’ (Clairecords 2004,) alongside numerous other releases. The turning point for the band came in 2005 when they recorded the beautiful ‘57 Octaves Below’ EP with legendary producer Pat Collier (The House of Love). As well as being their first recording with an expanded line up it was also their first release on UK label ‘Club AC30’ and was extremely well received…… ‘’57 Octaves Below’ is simply astonishing, as each track could hold its own as a formal “A side” among any peers both past and present. Remarkable. 9/10’‘Drowned In Sound. In the summer of 2006 the band returned to Pat Collier and recorded the new album ‘Daylight Storms’. This album was released by Club AC30 in February 2007. In November 2008 they released a new 7” “Things that don’t exist / Fires” on Distant Noise Records.
